Omtale af Clara Hastrup fra MUHZ

Clara Hastrup was born in 1990 in Aarhus, Denmark, and is currently living in Glasgow. Clara is self-taught and at the very beginning of her career in the art world. From august 2012 – June 2013 she has been attending the private art school Kunstskolen Spektrum and preparing her portfolio in order to apply for art academies. She has been accepted to Central Saint Martins College of Arts, London, The Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, ?Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam and ?Kungliga Konsthögskolan, Stockholm.

“To travel is one of my great passions. Going on longer journeys and travelling to exotic places, at times by myself, has a lot to do with seeing and confronting expectations. It’s very important for me to always keep my eyes open in order to learn and practice the eye. It is something I attempt in my everyday life as well. To achieve a critical eye one needs to look and process at all times and I hope for this to have an impact on my work in the future.“

After graduating from high school Clara has spent time travelling the world and after returning from a trip to the northern parts of Brazil and Argentina she spent the summer painting some of the places she had recently visited while dealing with layers and fragmentation of the subject.

“As for this series of paintings I found most of my inspiration in nature. I have attempted to capture the vulnerability of places that doesn’t suggest habitation or humanization – an exoticism that is afterwards dissolved and fragmented in the sense of non-existence. Illusions basically. This series was mainly an experiment for me with a new style and technique and practice of analyzing the colors and beauty in the landscape.”

Clara has just started her Bachelor in Fine Art Degree  - Painting and Printmaking at The Glasgow School of Art in September, 2013.
