JPI Climate Joint Call on "Russian Arctic and Boreal System" and related upcoming PEEX-3 meeting

We would like to highlight the pre-announcement of JPI Climate Joint Call on "Russian Arctic and Boreal System" and related upcoming PEEX-3 meeting in Hyytiälä (SMEAR-II station) Finland, in August 26-28, 2013. The meeting is very relevant, because it will bring together European and Russian key players to jointly plan the activities in Pan-Eurasian region.

JPI Climate Joint Call aims to improve the fundamental understanding of key biological and physical drivers and feedbacks in Russian Arctic/Boreal system (tundra-taiga-coastal region) to enable better representation of these processes in climate models. The proposals are particular invited on the topics:
1. Improving the understanding and the modelling of permafrost and its impact on the capture, storage and release of GHGs
2. The dynamics and drivers of climatically relevant gases in the terrestrial, freshwater and coastal environments

Consortia must consist of, at least one Russian partner based in an eligible institution*), and partners from at least two of the European countries*) participating in the call. * More information on eligible countries, funding organizations, budget and contact points will be published by 2nd September, 2013)

More information about the call can be found here: http://www.jpi-climate.eu/joint-actions/calltransnationalcollaborativeresearchprojects

PEEX-3 meeting will be held in Hyytiälä (SMEAR-II station) Finland, in August 26-28, 2013. The meeting is very relevant to the topic of the Joint Call, since PEEX (The Pan-Eurasian Experiment) aims to gather all the European and Russian key players in the field of climate and Earth system science to plan jointly in coordinated manner the future research activities in the Pan-Eurasian region.
The project started with the first workshop 2-4 October 2012 in Helsinki, Finland. The scope of the workshop was to set up a process for planning of a large-scale, long-term, coordinated observations and modeling experiment in the Pan Eurasian region, especially to cover ground base, airborne and satellite observations together with global and regional models to find out different forcing and feedback mechanisms in the changing climate.

The main aim of the upcoming meeting is:
- to finalize the PEEX Science Plan
- to draft 1.version of PEEX Implementation Plan
